The Best Coffee Beans in the World
Did You Know There are FOUR Types of Coffee Beans?
When seeking out the best coffee in the world, the search starts with the bean. And when it comes to coffee beans, there are four key types of beans responsible for delighting our senses and brightening up our day.
Most of us are probably familiar with Arabica and Robusta, so we’ll start there.
Arabica Beans
Arabica beans are among the most cultivated types of coffee beans in the world, and responsible for many of the world’s best coffees on our list. Typically grown at higher altitudes and favorable for high shade and heavy rainfall, these delicate beans are full of rich flavor and robust aroma.
Robusta Beans
The second leading bean in terms of production volume worldwide, Robusta is considered to be a bean of lesser quality. Chances are, if your coffee doesn’t say arabica on the label, its Robusta. Staying true to its namesake, this bean has a natural “robust” aversion to diseases and is a hearty bean that is easier to produce. Grown in hot climates and a broader range of altitudes, these beans are known for having up to double the amount of caffeine than does arabica. This aspect also results in a more bitter (sometimes described as harsh) flavor and hit to the palate. Because of this, those who opt for Robusta usually need to supplement the bean with milk, cream and/or sugar to counteract the harsh flavor.
P.S. None of our picks for the worlds’ best coffee are of the Robusta variety
Liberica
A bean that is much more difficult to source, Liberica beans are larger in size, and unlike all other coffee beans, boast an interesting irregular shape. The aroma and flavor of coffee made from these beans is often described as woody, smokey, floral and fruity.
Excelsa
Recently, this bean has been re-classified as part of the Liberica family. However, the aroma and flavor couldn’t be more contrasting to its relative. Both the flavor and aroma tend to be fruitier and tart, offering a unique blend of attributes typically reserved for either dark or light roasts and bringing them together in an interesting and delightful way.

Without further ado, and in no particular order…

Kopi Luwak or civet cat coffee, sometimes crudely referred to as “cat crap” coffee as a joke, is a highly special coffee because of how it is processed after cultivation.
It’s essentially a coffee that comes from the poop of the civet cats. Yes, you read that right lol.
The Luwak or the civet eats the raw coffee cherries. As it passes through the civet’s digestive system it undergoes a natural process that transforms this otherwise only moderately notable Arabica bean into something truly impressive.
